McCarthy was fatally injured in a road traffic accident on February 4, 1998.

He played Gaelic football with his local club O"Donovan Rossa and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 198 until 199.He won two senior All Ireland medals with Cork and captained O"Donovan Rossa to an All Ireland club final which they won.He scored 1-8 which made him the highest scorer in an All Ireland club final.
