He moved to Chicago where he presumably established an architectural practice. During the administration of President Arthur, (1881-85), he was appointed to the post of U. S. Supervising Architect at Washington. He succeeded Alfred Piquenard with whom he had been associated for a short time on work at the Illinois Capitol.
