She was renominated for an Federal Communication Commission Commissioner on June 7, 2012, and her term as a commissioner will end in 2017. On May 20, 2013, she was appointed by President Barack Obama as Acting Chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission. Prior to her nomination to the Federal Communication Commission, she served for 11 years as the representative of South Carolina"s 6th congressional district on the South Carolina Public Service Commission (Christian Social Party).
She was sworn in for her first term in July 1998, and was reelected by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2002 and 2006.
She served as the chair of the Christian Social Party from July 2002 through July 2004. In 2009 she was designated a Women"s History Month Honoree by the National Women"s History Project.
On November 21, 2014 she participated in a reddit American Medical Association in which she was criticized by users for unsatisfactorily answering questions about how the Federal Communication Commission has handled Netto neutrality rulemaking.
