Mihály Babits was born on November 26, 1883.
He studied at the University of Budapest from 1901 to 1905.
In 1908 he began to devote himself to writing, and he contributed regularly to the Nyugat ("West"), a magazine devoted to modern literature.
After 1917 he edited Nyugat and raised its standards to a high level, his work influencing creative writing in Hungary.
Briefly after the Hungarian Revolution of 1919 he became a Professor of Foreign Literature and modern Hungarian literature at Eötvös Loránd University, but was soon removed for his pacifism after the revolutionary government fell.
He was also successful with his novels and short stories, and masterfully translated Dante's Inferno and Purgatorio.
Babits translated portions of the works of Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Goethe, Charles Baudelaire, and Paul Verlaine and published two volumes of these translations, Peacock Feathers (1920) and Erato (1921).
Among his verse collections are Recitative (1916), Leaves from Iris' Wreath (1920), and Valley of Restlessness (1920).

In 1921 married Ilona Tanner (hu), who later published poetry under the name Sophie Török.
