(Exploring the limits faced by engineers as they struggle ...)
Exploring the limits faced by engineers as they struggle to go further with everything they build, this book takes as its basis some of the world's most ambitious modern projects. These include the plans of Sir Norman Foster and Kazo Shimizu to build a tower block almost a kilometre high; Hugh Doherty's Jubilee Line extension tunnel; Jean-Jacques Huber's 1000-passenger airbus; Stephen Gorevan's challenging attempt to design a vehicle that can land on and analyze a comet; Niels Gimsing's record-breaking suspension bridge in Denmark; and Peter Cochrane's plans for a fibre-optic network to encircle the earth.

(A vivid narration of the history of the tulip, from its o...)
A vivid narration of the history of the tulip, from its origins on the barren, windswept steppes of central Asia to its place of honor in the lush imperial gardens of Constantinople, to its starring moment as the most coveted—and beautiful—commodity in Europe. In the 1630s, visitors to the prosperous trading cities of the Netherlands couldn't help but notice that thousands of normally sober, hardworking Dutch citizens were caught up in an extraordinary frenzy of buying and selling. The object of this unprecedented speculation was the tulip, a delicate and exotic Eastern import that had bewitched horticulturists, noblemen, and tavern owners alike. For almost a year rare bulbs changed hands for incredible and ever-increasing sums until single flowers were being sold for more than the cost of a house. Historians would come to call it tulipomania.

(In 1628 the Dutch East India Company loaded the Batavia, ...)
In 1628 the Dutch East India Company loaded the Batavia, the flagship of its fleet, with a king’s ransom in gold, silver, and gems for her maiden voyage to Java; the ship itself was a tangible symbol of the world’s richest and most powerful monopoly. The company also sent along a new employee to guard its treasure. He was Jeronimus Corneliszoon, a disgraced and bankrupt man with great charisma and dangerously heretical ideas. With the help of a few disgruntled sailors, he hatched a plot to seize the ship and her riches. The mutiny might have succeeded, but in the dark morning hours of June 3, 1629, the Batavia smashed through a coral reef and ran aground on a small chain of islands near Australia. The captain and skipper escaped the wreck, and in a tiny lifeboat they set sail for Java - some 1,500 miles north - to summon help. More than 250 frightened survivors waded ashore, thankful to be alive. Unfortunately, Jeronimus and the mutineers had survived too, and the nightmare was only beginning.

(They called it Satan’s Circus - a square mile of Midtown ...)
They called it Satan’s Circus - a square mile of Midtown Manhattan where vice ruled, sin flourished, and depravity danced in every doorway. At the turn of the twentieth century, it was a place where everyone from the chorus girls to the beat cops was on the take and where bad boys became wicked men; a place where an upstanding young policeman such as Charley Becker could become the crookedest cop who ever stood behind a shield. Murder was so common in the vice district that few people were surprised when the loudmouthed owner of a shabby casino was gunned down on the steps of its best hotel. But when, two weeks later, an ambitious district attorney charged Becker with ordering the murder, even the denizens of Satan’s Circus were surprised.

blogger historian journalist researcher scientist writer
Dash was born in 1963 in London, United Kingdom.
Mike Dash was educated at Gatow School, Berlin, Wells Cathedral School, Somerset. Mike attended Peterhouse, a college at the University of Cambridge, where he later read history and ran the Cambridge student magazine. From there Mike moved on to King's College, London, where in 1990 he completed his doctor of philosophy thesis, describing British submarine policy between the Crimean and the First World Wars.
Dash's first job was compiling about a quarter of the entries for Harrap's Dictionary of Business and Finance (1988), a volume that he researched via clandestine meetings in a London Spud-U-Like with a college friend who had gone into banking. Mike Dash began a six-year career in journalism: he worked as a gossip columnist for Fashion Weekly and a section editor at the United Kingdom Press Gazette, the journalists' newspaper.
While still at the United Kingdom Press Gazette, John Brown took a call to Mike and asked him to suggest the names of some possible magazine publishers with an editorial background. Dash nominated himself and found himself hired to take over the eccentric portfolio of Viz Comic and Gardens Illustrated.
Dash's first book, The Limit (1995), was published by BBC Books and his second, Borderlands (1997) by Heinemann. He has since written five works of historical non-fiction, all of them acclaimed for combining detailed original research with a compelling narrative style. Dash wrote a series of books covering incidents in the history of the Dutch East India Company, the Netherlands, India under British rule, and New York during the Progressive Era. More recently he has become known as the author of a wide-ranging weekly historical blog, "Past Imperfect", written for the Smithsonian Institution. Having written his first three books while still with John Brown Publishing, Dash has been a full-time writer since 2001.
As a historian, Dash is noted for the high quality of his research. Many magazines wrote that he is a master of his deal. History in Dash’s books depicted as something interesting and overwhelming. That’s why it can be interesting even for a child. The example is his book "Past Imperfect."
Dash's most recent book, The First Family, is a new history of Giuseppe Morello and the establishment of the Mafia in the United States. He began writing for the Smithsonian Institution in July 2011 when the Institution acquired his history site, A Blast from the Past. Now Mike Dash appears regularly on British radio and television.

1997In addition, Dash notes, belief in such phenomena (UFOs, spontaneous human combustion, phone calls from beyond the grave, and other spooky phenomena) has changed history. For example, in 1856, a young African girl - a member of the Xhosa tribe - had a vision in which two beings told her that sinful people should slaughter all their cattle. Her people believed in the vision and killed 400,000 cattle, which led to the death of 40,000 Xhosa people and the absorption of their territory by South Africa. Dash believes that many of bizarre phenomena are the result of biochemical factors, such as epilepsy, oxygen starvation, and other problems, but not all of the events he mentions have an explanation.
Dash is that rarity: a perfectionist in his research and a writer who perfectly carves out his story with a pen as sharp as a stiletto. Dash is a rationalist skeptic, spent a great deal of time investigating accounts of UFOs, spontaneous human combustion, phone calls from beyond the grave, and other spooky phenomena.
Physical Characteristics: Mike Dash has short dark hair. He has got thin lips. Mike wears glasses. He is of medium height. Mike is chubby.
