He played four seasons playing Division I hockey with the Saint Lawrence University Saints, where he was twice named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Team, before making his profession debut with the Albany River Rats of the AHL in 2010. He retired from playing professional hockey on March 31, 2012. McKenzie joined the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League an assistant coach in 2012.
He was promoted to assistant general manager in 2015.
2007-2008: National Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC) All-Academic Team.
