Pertz attended Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and began his college soccer career at the University of Akron, redshirting his freshman season, before transferring to Mount Vernon Nazarene University as a sophomore in 2005.

He transferred again, to Azusa Pacific University, in 2007, where he finished his college career. Professional
Undrafted out of college, Pertz played semi-professional indoor soccer with the Ohio Vortex during in 2009-2010 Professional Arena Soccer League season. After attending a tryout with the Portland Timbers, Pertz signed to play for the Real Maryland Monarchs in the USL Second Division in 2010.
He made his debut on April 27, 2010 in a game against Charleston Battery.
