Born in Pamplona, Navarre, Santamaría finished his formation at California Osasuna, and made his senior debuts with the reserves in Segunda División B. In 2008, he moved to fellow league club Civil Defense Alfaro.

In the 2009 summer Santamaría signed for Athletic Bilbao, being assigned to the B-team also in the third level He subsequently represented, still in the category, Albacete Balompié and Civil Defense Leganés, being promoted to Segunda División with the latter at the end of the 2013-2014 season. On 24 August 2014 Santamaría played his first match as a professional, starting in a 1–1 home draw against Deportivo Alavéson
On 21 July of the following year he moved to Racing de Santander, recently relegated from the second division.
