1905-1914 lived and worked in India, studying Urdu and Pushtu and collecting ethnographic data on Indian peoples on behalf of Academy of Sciences. From 1910 Russian vice-consul in Pondichery. 1914-1918 inspector of educational colleges in Centr Asia.
From 1918 first rector, Turkestani Oriental Institute (later Oriental Faculty, Centr Asian University). Also taught Persian language and ethnography. Led expeditions to Centr Asia.
1925 and 1927 to Yagnob. 1929 and 1943 to the Pamirs and Western Pamirs. 1936 and 1940 to Bukhara, et cetera
