Entered the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (State Film School). Assistant director to Joseph Heifitz on The Lady with a Little Dog. First short Film, Ten Seconds in an Hour (documentary, student work).
One of his most beautiful films is The Two, made in 1965 at Riga Film Studio with Viktoria Fedorova in the leading role. The Two is based on the love story of a young musician and a deafmute girl who loses her hearing during the siege of Leningrad. His next feature film, Zosya, was made in 1967 at the Gorkii Studios in Moscow, as was About Love in 1971.
Emigrated to America in the mid- 1970s.
