Volunteered for active service during the RussoJapanese war in 1904. During World War I, commander of a regiment, later a division. After the October Revolution, organized a detachment of volunteers in Bessarabia, some 1000 men (December 1917), and fought his way through the revolutionary chaos in the Ukraine to the Don (spring 1918), where he joined the White armies, thus drastically changing their fortunes at that moment (almost doubling their strength).
