1890 graduate History and Philology Department, Kiev University.
1894- 1914 professor and head, Chair of World History, L'vov University. Lectured on history of Ukraine. From 1897 simultaneously chairman, Ukraine Shevchenko Sciences Association and ed of its organ Zapiski.
1898 set up periodical Literaturno-naukovyy vistnyk. During 1905 Rcvol lived in Kiev, directing the Shevchenko Association. At the outbreak of World War 1 settled in Kiev, was arrested and exiled to Simbirsk.
After 1917 February Revol returned to Kiev and took active part in establishing independent Ukraine. 1917-1918 chairman, Ukraine Centr Rada. Early 1919, when Ukraine was occupied by Bolsheviks, emigrated to Austria, set up Ukraine Sociological Institute in Vienna and directed its activities.

From 1930 lived in Moscow. 1933 accused of setting up the "counter-revolutionary” Ukraine National Center and of participating in the activities of Ukraine Socialist-Revol Party. While a follower of V. B. Antonovich compiled the first work on the history of Ukraine from ancient times to the mid-17th Century and founded a Ukraine historical school classified by Soviet historiography as “nationalistic school”.
Interpreted the history of Kiev Rus as the history of Ukraine people, the continuation of which he saw in the Duchy of Galicia and Volhynia and to some extent in the Grand Duchy of Lith and the Cossack Ukraine. Similarly denied the theory of the existence of an "All-Russian” language and nationality during the Kiev Rus epoch. According to his theory, right from the ancient period of Slavic colonization the Eastern Slavic group consisted of three principal national groups.
