Early involvement in revolutionary activity. Bolshevik before World War I. Later became a Menshevik, but after the Bolshevik take-over, in contrast to most members of his party, favoured collaboration with the Bolsheviks. Left the Mensheviks in 1920.
Several posts in the Soviet administration. Arrested, 1930, and tried, 1931. In Gulag camps from 1931.
Released after Stalin’s death.
1953, and rehabilitated, 1956. Wrote about his camp experiences. Became a rare link between the non-communist socialists of the revolutionary period and present-day dissidents.
