Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov studied under Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1872 to 1875.
In 1882, Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov became a conductor of the symphony orchestra and director of the music school in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia. He taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1893 to 1906, served as its director from 1906 to 1922, and was a conductor of the Mamontova Opera from 1899 to 1906. In 1924-25, he reorganized the Georgian State Conservatory, formerly the Tbilisi School. After 1925 he was conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre.
Mikhail was a composer of several operas and other musical works, mostly with Caucasian themes, including the suite Caucasian Sketches in 1895, Armenian Rhapsody in 1909, and a symphonic poem after a poem by Mikhail Lermontov, Mtsyri in 1922.
Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov was a distinguished composer of orchestral works and operas, of which the most popular were influenced by Caucasian and Georgian folk music. He was very influential in the Soviet music world in the 1920s and 1930s.
Mikhail was married to Varvara Mikhailovna Ippolitova-Ivanova. Thjey had a daughter, Tatiana.
