1896 graduate Law Faculty, Moscow University. 1894-1896 studied composition under North. South. Klcnovskiy in Moscow and 1898-1900 under Rimsky-Korsakov in Saint St. Petersburg. 1901-1905 studied music history in Italy.
1905 returned to Russia and became active in various music socs and educational organizations, including Comic Opera Circle, which staged his opera Adol fina in 1908. 1913 composed opera Koldun'ya (The Sorceress), after Chirikov, which was banned by the censors and not produced until 1918. From 1922 professor, Moscow Conservatory.
Edited Materialy t dokumenty po istorii muzyki (Material and Documents on the History of Music) (2 volume, 1934). Cd, Muzykal’no-istoricheskaya khrestomatiya (An Anthology of Musical History) (3 volume, 1929). Editor, collection Muzykdl’noye nasledstvo (Musical Heritage) (1935), containing material on the history of Russian and for opera.
