1897 graduate Khar’kov Veterinary Institute.
After graduate worked as veterinary surgeon in Oryol Province. 1898 sent abroad to study West European animalbreeding methods. Studied at Agric Department, Zurich University.
From 1900 taught animal-husbandry and hygiene at Khar’kov Veterinary Institute. 1903 defended master’s thesis on changes in nitrogenous substances in moldy fodder. From 1906 professor, Khar’kov Veterinary Institute.
1914-1935 professor, Moscow Agric Institute (now Timiryazev Agric Academy). 1925 established experimental breeding station at Aksaniya-Nova, where he did research on stock-breeding. 1935 member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Ccntr Executive Committee.
Apart from stock-breeding, did major research on animal selection and acclimatization. Devised methods of breeding new stock and improving old, taking feeding, maintenance, constitution and productivity as his main criteria. Bred fine-fleeced Askanian sheep with a high wool and meat yield, white LIkr steppe hog, et cetera
The All-Union Animal Hybridization and Acclimatization Institute at Askaniya-Nova now bears his name. Wrote numerous works, including manuals on sheep-, hogand poultry-breeding.
