Worked as a statistician. Until October 1917 Ukraine Progrcssivisl. Member. Constitutional Democratic Party.
1917-1918 member, Socialist-Revol Party. 1930, in the trial of the Union for the Liberation of the Ukraine, accused of systematic agitation and propaganda of bourgeois nationalistic ideas in his works and sentenced to imprisonment (suspended). Later arrested by State Security organs.
Main theme of Ivchenko’s stories was the "power of the earth": his typical heroes were strong peasants holding on to their farms. Extolled patriarchal village as the symbol and guarantee of the national independence of the Ukraine.
