1897-1900 worked in office of Putilov Plant. Simultaneously performed in amateur plays. 1900 began stage career with Saint St. Petersburg clubs and summer theaters.
1902-1904 play'ed in provinces (Dvinsk and Odessa). 1905-1909 in Moscow at Korsh Theater. 1909-1942 (except 1918-1919 and 1925-1927 when he played at Korsh Theater) performed at Moscow Maly Theater.
Excellent comedy actor of realist school. Roles: stage roles: Zemlyanik in Gogol's Revizor (The Government Inspector) (1922, 1938). Telyatev and Gorodulin in Ostrovsky's Beshenyye den’gi (Mad Money) and Na vsyakogo mudretsa dovol’no prostoty (There’s a Simpleton in Every Sage) (1935).
