First appeared in print in 1905. Became almost a symbol of aesthetic circles before World War I: delicate, dandified and homosexual, nevertheless had a craftsman’s grip on verse and prose, becoming the counterpart in literature of the Mir Iskusstva painters. Universally liked for his polished behaviour and wide knowledge of world culture and art.
Produced excellent translations of Boccaccio and Shakespeare. During World War I, his 9-volume collected works was published in Petrograd, 1914-1918.
