Specialized in the ancient history of the Don and Azov region. Conducted archaeological expeditions, with his brother A. Miller, in the 1920s. Several of his monographs were published in Rostov, and by the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
During and after World War II, in German and DP camps in West Germany. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, published his main work, Don i Priazov'e v Drevnosli, 3 vol., Munich.
