1883 studied at Law Faculty, Saint St. Petersburg University.
As a student joined “People's Will” movement. 1894-1898 in solitary confinement in prison. 1898— 1903 in Olekminsk, Yakutsk Oblast.
In this period switched sympathies to Social-Democrats. 1904 emigrated to Switzerland, met Lenin and joined Bolsheviks. 1905 returned to Saint St. Petersburg and worked for legal and underground Bolshevik publications (“Vperyod”, “Proletariy”, “Novaya zhizn’” and “Volna”, etc).
1907-1909 Party work in Baku. 1909-1914 statistician in Petrograd and worked for newspapers “Zvezda” and “Pravda”. 1915 in Saratov, editing legal Bolshevik paper “Nasha gazeta”.
From August 1916 member, Moscow Oblast Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Bureau and ed, journal “Golos pechatnogo truda”. 1917 active in Bolshevik movement in Petrograd and Moscow. Bureau member, Central Committee, Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) and member Moscow Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Committee.
Contributed to “Pravda”. Company-ed, Moscow Bolshevik newspaper “Sotsial-Democrat”. From December 1917 Collegium member, People's Commissariat of Finance.
1918-1920 member, editorial board, “Pravda”. 1920-1924 chairman, Commission on the History of the October Revol and the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks), Central Committee, Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) and edited its journal “Proletarskaya revolyutsiya”. From 1925 chairman, Soviet of above Commission and ed, journal “Proletarskaya revolyutsiya”.
From 1928 co-director, Institute of Lenin, Central Committee, All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). From 1932 chief cd and chairman, ed commission for publ of Saltykov-Shrhcdrin’s works. 1922 partly incapacitated by stroke but continued his research on Party history.
Worked for Russian Association of Proletarian Writers and contributed to its organ “Na literatumom poslu”. Also helped Stalin in his campaign against Trotsky (collection Lenin o Trotskom i trotzskizme (Lenin on Trotsky and Trotskyism) (1925) 1 and then against Kamenev, Zinov’yev and Bukharin.
Communist Party member from 1898.
