Fought in Civil War in Ukraine, Volga Region, Centr Asia and Transcaucasia. 1932-1936 commands with armored troops. 1936-1937 volunteer with Spanish Republic tank troops.
From 1937 commander, Kalinovskiy Mechanized Corps, then 15th Tank Corps. 1939 took part in Galician campaign. 1941 commander, 50th Army on Bryansk Front.
Deputy, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Supreme Soviet of 1937 convocation. October 1941 seriously wounded as the remnants of his army were trying to break out of German encirclement, left with peasants in German-occupied territory.
