From 1890’s active in revol movement. Propaganda among workers in Khar’kov, Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog. 1902 arrested for participating in May Day political demonstration in Rostov-on-Don, and 1903 exiled to Eastern Siberia.
Fled from exile and went abroad. 1904 worked with Berlin Group for the Promotion of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party. 1904 returned to Russia with a transport of illegal propaganda lit and continued party work in Saint St. Petersburg.
From 1914 practised as lawyer 1918 worked for Petrograd Food Commissariat. 1919 with Polit Department, Baltic Fleet.
From 1921 professor, 1927-1930 rector, Leningrad University. 1930-1948 engaged in art and philosophical studies. Director, Institute of Art History, All-Russian Academy of Arts and Economy, Philosophy and Law Institute.
Wrote 35 research works.
Communist Party member from 1904.
