From 1896 involved with Marxist circles. 1899 arrested and exiled from Moscow. Foreign several years engaged in revol work in southern Russia, Crimea and Caucasus.
1905 went abroad; met Lenin in Geneva and at his suggestion began to work for Bolshevik organs “Vperyod” and “Proletary”. Summer 1905 sent by Lenin to Odessa for military revol work in southern Russia. Then worked in Moscow.
Coopted to Moscow Party Committee. Member, Executive Commission, Moscow Party Committee. 1905 helped found Moscow Soviet of Workers’ Deputy.
Edited Moscow Party Committee’s legal newspaper “Vperyod”. Helped organize December 1905 armed uprising in Moscow and was a member of its executive staff, arrested shortly after the start of the revolt. 1906-1917 Party work in various towns of southern Russia and Volga area.
Imprisoned 11 times and exiled twice. March 1917 helped establish Saratov Soviet of Workers and Soldiers’ Deputy. Chairman, Saratov Province Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Committee.
October 1917 directed Bolshevik revolt in Saratov. January 1919 — January 1921 Collegium member, People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs). Helped organize Soviet police force.
Summer 1919 member, Revol Military Council, 15th Army. Late 1921 - March 1924 assistant prosecutor, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Supreme Court. 1924-1937 deputy chairman, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Supreme Court.
