From the age of 15 Mikhail made archaeological excavations in the vicinity of Irkutsk.

Career
Mikhail Mikhailovich worked in the Irkutsk Local History Museum, where he traveled from a student trainee to head of the archaeological department. In 1928 he discovered and explored the Upper Paleolithic site "Malta". In 1937, Gerasimov developed a method of restoring the face on the skull. Since 1950, the head of the laboratory of plastic reconstruction of the Institute of Ethnography under the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Achievements

During his life he created about 200 reconstructions, including the most ancient people - Pithecanthropus, Sinanthropus, Neanderthals, Cro-Magnon and others. Recreated portraits of many historical figures - Yaroslav the Wise, Timur, Ivan the Terrible and other figures.
In 1933, 1953 and 1954 he took part in archaeological excavations in the village of Kostyonki (now Khokholsky district, Voronezh region). On the skulls found in the parking lots "Kostenki-2" and "Kostenki-14", Mikhail reconstructed portraits of the ancient inhabitants of our region.
Author of 57 scientific publications.
