Aaland has worked as the part-time manager of Foote Photos - a portable portrait studio - since 1971; since 1974 he has been working as a freelance photographer and writer. He founded and organized the 1974 Northern California Photo-Communications Conference, which has since turned into an annual event.
The artist's work includes portraits in medium formats and reportage in 35mm. He also writes regularly for books, magazines and newspapers.
