Statkevich graduated from a military engineering school in Minsk and served in the Soviet antiaircraft defense in the Arctic region.

Presidential elections were held December 19, 2010. The same evening, and on the night of December 20, 2010 at the Independence Square in Minsk held a protest meeting which was attended by Statkevich. The rally was violently dispersed by riot police and interior troops. After breaking up the meeting Statkevich tried to leave the area by taxi, but was detained.
Detainee faced up to 15 years in prison for organizing the riots. January 11, 2011 Amnesty International prisoner of conscience recognized Statkevich.
May 26, 2011 Statkevich was sentenced to six years imprisonment in strict regime.
