Brooks began newspaper work at the Chicago Herald Examiner, and then worked for the Chicago Daily News, Paramount News Reel and New York Daily News. He was employed by the Detroit News from 1928 to 1953, at which time he became a commercial photograph.
He won first-prize awards from Editor & Publisher, the Michigan State/AP News Photo Contest and the Inland Daily Press Association Photo Contest.
His Pulitzer-winning photograph showed the confrontation between Ford Motor Company and the striking members of the United Auto Workers on April 2, 1941.
