Milton David Soffer

Background

Soffer was born on December 11, 1914 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of Henry Alfred Soffer and Hannah (Kleinman) Soffer.

Education

Soffer received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arkansas in 1937. Two years later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1942 from Harvard University.

Career

Soffer began his career as a member of faculty at Smith College in 1942. Fourteen years later he was appointed a professor of chemistry at the same college. Since 1970 Milton was a Sophia Smith professor at Smith College. In addition, he held a position of a visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts. Nowadays Soffer is a Sophia Smith professor emeritus at Smith College.

Achievements

• Soffer was given a research grant from Research Corporation in 1946-1952 and National Science Foundation from 1952 to 1968.

Soffer is a member of American Institute of Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of University Professors, American Chemical Society, Society of Harvard Chemists and Sigma Xi.
