Soffer received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arkansas in 1937. Two years later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1942 from Harvard University.
Soffer began his career as a member of faculty at Smith College in 1942. Fourteen years later he was appointed a professor of chemistry at the same college. Since 1970 Milton was a Sophia Smith professor at Smith College. In addition, he held a position of a visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts. Nowadays Soffer is a Sophia Smith professor emeritus at Smith College.
Soffer is a member of American Institute of Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of University Professors, American Chemical Society, Society of Harvard Chemists and Sigma Xi.
On February 16, 1957 Milton Soffer married Rosanne Smith. They have three children.
