Began teaching school soon after 16th birthday, reading law at intervals. Applied himself exclusively to the study of law from December 1860. Enlisted, April 1861, on outbreak of Civil War, as private in 2d Louisiana Infantry.
Served in Army of Northern Virginia.
Wounded at Malvern Hill, Gettysburg and Spottsylvania Court House. At close of war resumed study of law and practiced, since 1866.
District attorney, 1872-1875. Member Louisiana House of Representatives, 1879.
