Minedayu Okamoto was born in Edo (now Tokyo, Japan).
Minedayu Okamoto originated the genji-bushi style of recitation. He was at first a reciter of the shinnai-bushi style. Afterward, he adopted features of the sekkyo-bushi of Wakadayu Satsuma and started the sekkyo-genji-bushi. The name derives from the fact that he liked to recite historical events connected with the Genji (Minamoto) Family. In early years of the Meiji Era, his recitation was well received at Tokyo.
