He is currently Professor of Number Theory and Fellow of Merton College at the University of Oxford. His most notable contribution to number theory has been the application of arithmetic homotopy to the study of Diophantine problems, especially to finiteness theorems of the Faltings–Siegel type. In 2012, Minhyong Kim received the Ho-Am Prize for Science, with the Ho-Am committee citing him as "one of the leading researchers in the area of arithmetic algebraic geometry".
