He studied at the Western-Style Painting Department of Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts.
While studying at Western-Style Painting Department of Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts, Yamada Minoru exhibited his painting "Asakusa Junikai" (The Twelve-Story Tower at Asakusa) which won him recognition. Upon graduation, he joined Kodansha Publishing Company and Chuo Shimbun Company and displayed skill as a unique cartoonist. Joined the staff of the newly inaugurated comics column of "Tokyo Asahi Shimbun" (newspaper) in 1921.
