In the theater - since 1872 (Kharkov): he gained recognition immediately in the roles of Zhadov (“Profitable Place” by Alexander Ostrovsky) and Chatsky (“Woe from Wit” by Alexander Griboedov), then he played Hamlet (the work on this role lasted all his life). He chose the fate of the guest actor. He was popular with the democratic intelligentsia. He performed in Voronezh (1884, 1886) several times. Voronezh critics noted in the work of the actor the features of the neurasthenic role then and brought him closer to the Ukrainian actor N.K. Sadovsky (troupe MP Staritskogo, 1881).
