1915 graduate Bezborodko Institute of History and Philology, Nezhin. 1930-1933 postgraduate studies at Leningrad Institute of History. Philosophy and Linguistics.
Career
From 1918 taught and did government work in Sudzha. From 1933 senior associate, State Academy of the History of Civilization. From 1938 senior associate, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences, where he was in charge of the Byzantine group.
1940-1944 head, Leningrad Department, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1944-1950 founder-head, Chair of Byzantine Studies, Leningrad University. Studied soc and economics history of early Byzantium and relations between Byzantium and Kievan Rus.
