He rose to the Court rank of Gon-Chunagon (Vice-Minister) and enjoyed the favor of ex-Emperor Toba.He failed to dissuade ex-Emperor Toba from his plan of overthrowing the Kamakura Shogunate. In 1221, he reluctantly attacked Yoshitoki Hojo (Prime Minister of the Shogunate) as desired by the ex-emperor but was defeated and killed in Suruga (Shizuoka Prefecture). Before death he entered priesthood.
His daughter, Mitsuko, nursed Emperor Juntoku.
