Before obtaining a post at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, in 1953, Taketani’s life, both as physicist and philosopher, had been difficult. After the Second World War, however, his influence grew greatly. His interest in debates about the uses of technology and involvement in the anti-nuclear peace movement as a nuclear physicist marked an epoch in the postwar philosophical world in Japan. He also became actively engaged in a number of environmental movements in the 1970s, and has forcibly accused fellow scientists of the violation of both nature and human rights.
