He engaged in metal mining in his native province until the Shogunate prohibited it. He then moved to Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture) and was permitted to engage in mining there. The present Hitachi copper mine was first tapped by Moemon. After the farmers along the Kuji River suffered from a great drought in 1645, Moemon mapped out a riparian program which was carried out in five years. He worked for 15 years for the riparian works of the Mito Clan.
