Background
He was born in rich feudal Sharif family from Béja, his family had close ties with the Bey court: his paternal grandfather Ahmed Zarrouk was the secretary of the cheikh Youssef Bourtaghiz (the Hanafit bach-mufti and the power brokerof Hussein Bey I), his maternal grandfather was the influential minister Radjab Khaznadar.
