Educated locally then at Omdurman and Khartoum. Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from London University, then obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy in Scientific Planning from the University of California.
On his return to Khartoum he joined the Ministry of Education, rising to be Assistant Secretary for Planning, Research and Books. He took part in seminars in Europe and America on educational problems. His administrative skills resulted in his appointment as manager of the Administration and Production Efficiency Centre at Khartoum. Without any previous government experience, he quickly established his authority as a minister in October 1972. He lost his place in the cabinet at the streamlining on May 10, 1973.
