Mohammed Aden Seck was born in 1935, in Dusa Mareb, Somalia.
He went to the Hamar Geb-Geb Elementary School in Mogadishu and to other local schools where he later taught for a period. He studied medicine and surgery at Rome University, passing out in 1964 with highest marks. He returned to Somalia for a year and practised as a surgeon at the Mogadishu General Hospital, returning to Italy for a further year in 1966 to specialise in general surgery at Bologna University.
These excellent medical qualifications and his good connections with thfc revolutionary leaders made him a natural choice for the post of Secretary of State for Health in the first cabinet chosen after the Somali coup.
Coming from the same part of the country and closely related to President Siyad, he is regarded as his unofficial personal adviser with considerable influence. He also has a number of his own men among the other Secretaries, including Mohammed Yusuf Weyrah, the Secretary for Finance. He has ambitious plans for the Ministry of Health, with a rapid training programme for new doctors.
