Mohammed bin Salman challenged the religious status quo in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi royal family has long ruled the kingdom in concert with ultraconservative Wahhabi clerics, but they have been accused of funding and supporting radical extremists and preventing social reforms. Salman has called for the return to an earlier period of a more tolerant form of Islam. He said that Saudi Arabia should become a country that is open to all religions and to the world.
When Mohammed bin Salman became State Minister, he immediately faced growing political unrest as Houthi rebels took control of northern Yemen in late 2014. Mohammed launched an aggressive military intervention in Yemen's civil war. However, this campaign failed to turn the tide in the war and led to little more than a prolonged stalemate and one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history.
As Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced his intention to restructure Saudi Arabia's economy in April 2016. He introduced Vision 2030 plan that was designed to wean Saudi Arabia from its dependence on oil exports and streamline government bureaucracy. In 2017, Mohammed bin Salman made a public warning about a corruption crackdown and orchestrated the arrest of over 40 princes and government ministers, which also included Saudi prince and billionaire Al-Waleed bin Talal, for corruption and money laundering. Later, in October 2017, bin Salman announced plans for the creation of Neom. The 10,000-square mile economic zone that would be located in the as-yet under-developed Red Sea region, with a focus on new technologies, including robotics and renewable energy. Saudi Arabia aims to complete the first section of NEOM by 2025.
Mohammed bin Salman made cultural reforms that have led to Saudi Arabia's first public concert by a female singer in December 2017, after which a sports stadium in Jeddah became the first in the kingdom to admit women. In 2018, the nation's decades-long ban on movie theaters was lifted, the kingdom will now allow for a broader variety of entertainment options and work is even underway for a vast amusement park. Thanks to Mohammed bin Salman, the laws that allowed men to strictly control the economic and personal lives of their wives have been eased. Women in Saudi Arabia now can open businesses and more freely enter the workforce. Mohammed bin Salman is also credited for having influenced the removal of the ban on female drivers in September 2017. He also established the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Foundation which attempts to further the goals set by Vision 2030 by empowering the younger generation.
