He played 14 times for his national team, Yugoslavia, between 1969 and 1974 scoring four goals. In his club career in, he appeared in a total of 752 games in all competitions and all age levels, scoring 306 goals. He started playing for in 1962, at the age of 12.
In 1978, he transferred to the French side Football Club Bordeaux, where he played for one season, scoring 8 goals in 36 games.

He became coach in 1988 and until 1999 he coached, Panionios, Apollon Limassol, Nea Salamis Famagusta Football Club, Ethnikos Achna Football Club. He became assistant coach of Yugoslavia, but he failed to lead his team in the 2002 Fédération internationale de football association World Cup, since for one point less than the second Slovenia, Yugoslavia remained third. After Yugoslavia, he continued being a national team"s coach, this time for Cyprus and his team finished 4th for the 2004 Union of European Football Associations European Football Championship qualifying, collecting 8 points and some criticism began for Vukotić.
He has been in charge at Football Club Farul Constanța since January 2006.
This was the second entry in the European Cups for Farul. Several players from Farul accused Vukotić of using an ineffective defensive style. Vukotić main objective for the 2006-2007 season was to qualify for Europe next year, but he was released early on into the season after some poor results.
In October 2006, he became a coach of PAOK, but got released in January 2007.
