Mononobe-no-Moriya opposed Buddhism and be¬came embroiled in a controversy with the Sogas, who were pro-Buddhists. He attributed epidemics, which were then rampant, to Buddhism and petitioned Emperor Bitatsu to destroy temples and towers and to burn Buddhist images. Was on friendly terms with Prince Anahobe and a con¬fident of Emperor Yomei. When the Em¬peror died, revolted along with the Prince, but was defeated and killed by the Sogas.
