WARD, Monsigrnor Bernard was born on February 4, 1857 in Old Hall, Hertfordshire. 3rd son of W. G. Ward of Northwood, Isle of Wight, known at Oxford as “ Ideal ” Ward, one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement.

Studied at St. Edmund’s College Old Hall, 1868-1875. Oscott College Birmingham, 1879-1882.
Ordained priest by Cardinal Manning, 1882. A master at St. Edmund’s College 1882-1885. Established new mission, Willesden, 88.
A master at Oscott 1888-1890, during which time attended science lectures at Mason College Birmingham. Vice-President, St. Edmund’s College, Old Hall, 1890. President, 1893.
The centenary of the College, celebrated July 1893 (100 years since Douay College, broke up during French Revolution, and students as they escaped from prison reassembled at Old Hall, the law forbidding Catholic colleges in England having been mitigated just at that time).
