The presence of such eminent personalities allows Singaporeans, especially younger executives and decision-makers in both the public and private sectors, the benefit of exposure to leading world figures, who address topics of international and regional interest.
Moon Jae-in is a South Korean politician, lawyer and President of South Korea. He also served as chief of staff to then-president Roh Moo-hyun and a member of the 19th National Assembly. Besides, between 2015 and 2016, Moon was the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea.
Background
Moon Jae-in was born on January 24, 1953 in Geoje, South Korea. He is the son of Moon Yong-hyung and Kang Han-ok. Moon has three sisters and a brother. At the time of the Hungnam evacuation during the Korean War, his family moved to Busan, and it was there, that Moon spent his childhood.
Education
Moon Jae-in attended Namhang Elmentary School and also studied at Gyeongnam Middle School. In 1971, he finished Kyungnam High School and entered Kyung Hee University in Seoul in 1972 and became active in the student movement against the authoritarian regime of then-President of South Korea - Park Chung-Hee. He was expelled from the university and briefly imprisoned for his activism. However, he returned to his studies and earned a law degree from Kyung Hee University in 1980. Later that year, Moon was admitted to the Judicial Research and Training Institute. He graduated from the Institute as the second in his class, but was not admitted to become a judge or state prosecutor due to his history of activism against the Yushin dictatorship under Park Chung-hee's rule as a student.
In 1975, Moon Jae-in was conscripted to the military and assigned to the South Korean special forces. During his military service, he participated in "Operation Paul Bunyan." After graduation from Kyung Hee University, Moon started his career as a lawyer in 1982, when he opened a law office, specializing in human rights and civil society. At the same time, he became a partner and a friend of future President Roh Moo-hyun. Together, they took cases, involving the labor rights issues, and became renowned for his work in labor human rights. When Roh decided to run for the presidency in 2002, he made Moon his campaign manager during his presidential bid. Upon becoming President, Roh made Moon his chief of staff and close aide. Moon assumed several important roles under the Roh administration. From 2003 to 2004, he served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs and, from May 2004 to January 2005, was Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Society. From January 2005 to May 2006, Moon again served as Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs.
In 2007, Moon Jae-in became Chief Presidential Secretary and became the principal organizer of a historic summit between Roh and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in October 2007. However, he came under fire over allegations, that the government of then-President Roh had consulted North Korea before abstaining from a United Nations vote on a human rights resolution against the North in 2007. Moon denied the allegations and left his post. Later, in 2009, Mr. Roh committed suicide and Moon Jae-in oversaw the memorial services for his friend. In 2010, he became chairperson of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation. Over the ensuing years, Moon intensified his political involvements and earned a reputation for being pro-democratic and anti-corruption. In 2012, he entered a bid for a seat in the National Assembly in the 19th legislative election and won a seat in the Sasang District of Busan as a member of the Democratic United Party.
In 2012, Moon Jae-in became the Democratic United Party's presidential nominee and ran for the 2012 presidential election, but he lost it. He continued to be active on the political front and was elected as chairman of New Politics Alliance for Democracy in February 2015. Later, he renamed the liberal, New Politics Alliance for Democracy Party, to the new Democratic Party. Moon served as the leader of Democratic Party until 2016 and, in the 2017, ran for the office as the Minjoo Party of Korea nominee in presidential election. He emerged victorious in the election, held on May 9, 2017, and was sworn in as President on May 10.
In 2020, more than 1.5 million South Koreans have signed a petition to impeach Moon over what they claimed was the government's mishandling of the coronavirus outbreak in South Korea. After that, a petition to support Moon was raised and more than 1.3 million South Koreans have signed it. His handling of the coronavirus pandemic in early 2020 provided a massive boost to his popularity.
Moon Jae-in is a South Korean politician, layer and President of South Korea. Holding the post of President, he has raised the minimum wage of the country by more than 16 percent. Besides, he has received praise domestically and internationally due to his response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moon is also famous for his idea of a peaceful reunification with North Korea. He achieved international attention for his meetings with North Korean chairman, Kim Jong-un, at inter-Korean summits in 2018. Moon became the third South Korean President to meet their North Korean counterpart.
Moon Jae-in is a Grand Master and Knight of the Grand Order of Mugunghwa. In 2017, he was awarded the Global Citizen Award. He also received the Order of Saint Olav and the Order of the Seraphim in 2019.

Religion
Moon Jae-in is a Roman Catholic. His Christian name is Timothy.
Politics
As a student of Kyung Hee University, Moon Jae-in became involved in political activism and often staged student protests. He once organized a protest against the Yushin Constitution, which led to his arrest and expulsion from the university. Later, he and Roh Moo-hyun became leading figures in the pro-democracy movement, which swept the country and led to South Korea's first democratic election in 1987.
During 2017 presidential election, Moon pledged to rein in the power of the chaebols, to sever the ties between government and business and to adopt a more nuanced North Korea policy. He promised to support job creation, start-ups and small to mid-sized companies and also announced a goal to create 810,000 public sector jobs through raising taxes on the wealthy. Moon Jae-in also promised transparency in his presidency, moving the presidential residence from the palatial and isolated Blue House to an existing government complex in downtown Seoul.
Moon has relatively liberal stance in foreign policy. He opposed a re-balance of the security alliance with the United States, however, he also stated, that he would like South Korea to be able to take the lead on matters on the Korean Peninsula. He said, that America can help South Korea to avoid communism. Moon also stood for a peaceful reunification between the two Koreas.
When Moon Jae-in became President, he made a Chaebol reform. He appointed "chaebol sniper" Kim Sang-jo, a well-known shareholder activist, to the role of fair-trade commissioner, aimed at reforming chaebols (large industrial conglomerate, that is run and controlled by an owner or family in South Korea). Moon has launched a series of minimum wage hikes and reduced the maximum hour work week from 68 to 52. Moon's administration has focused on increasing South Korea's consumption of natural gas, away from nuclear and coal as sources of energy. He said, that in the future Korea will abandon the development policy, centered on nuclear power plants, and exit the era of nuclear energy.
Moon Jae-in faced the immediate problem of North Korea leader Kim Jong-un's attempts to develop his nuclear weapons program. He said, that he would have a firm say in matters of negotiation and military strategy. In 2017, Moon halted the activation of the United States installed Terminal High Altitude Air Defense system (THAAD), pending an environmental review. Later, he reaffirmed his goal of eliminating nuclear weapons on the peninsula. In January 2018, representatives from North and South Korea met at the border truce village of Panmunjom, resulting in an agreement to have their athletes march under the banner of a unified Korea at the 2018 Winter Olympics. On April 27, 2018, Moon Jae-in met with Kim Jong-un in Panmunjom. They discussed the resumption of four-party talks between their countries, the United States and China, as well as the conclusion of a peace treaty, that would officially bring the Korean War to a close. They also signed a joint declaration, that called for complete denuclearization, a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.
Moon Jae-in's response to the COVID-19 pandemic became the centerpiece of the Democratic Party's campaign ahead of the April 2020 legislative election. Moon's Democratic coalition won and received 180 of 300 legislative seats.
Views
In one of his interview Moon Jae-in said, that he opposes homosexuality. This statement prompted immediate criticism and outrage from gay rights activists. Later, he clarified his comments, suggesting, that he still believes there should be no discrimination, based on sexual orientation. However, Moon still opposed to legalization of same-sex marriage.
Quotations:
"It is more important, than anything, to keep up the momentum for dialogue between North Korea and the United States."
"We must work to make the South-North Korea dialogue lead to talks between the United States and North Korea. Only then can we peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear issue."
"I will do whatever it takes to help settle peace on the Korean Peninsula."
"Creating a structure for mutual prosperity requires lowering regional and transnational barriers to facilitate the flow of goods and promote people-to-people interactions."
