Doctor of Laws New York, United States 1874. Apprentice wholesale drapery trade. Usher in boys’ school.
Lawyer’s clerk, nine years certificated teacher in a National School. Doctor of Laws.
Appointed 1860 to India Museum. Transferred to Kew Gardens, botanical work, largely devoted to Cryptogamia. Awarded 430 Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society, and Linnean Gold Medal by Linnean Society, 1903. A.L.S., formerly at the Herbarium of the Royal Gardens, Kew.
