Morgan was an American politician as well as business and sports executive. He was a Hartford city councilman and bank president.

Background

Morgan Bulkeley died in Hartford at age 84. The Hartford Bridge over the Connecticut River was renamed the Bulkeley Bridge in his honor after his death.

Education

Morgan Bulkeley attended Hartford Public High School and, at age 14, started working at the Aetna sweeping floors for a dollar a day along with his brother, Charles.

He was educated at Bacon Academy in Colchester just like his father and his cousins on both sides.

Career

Organized, 1872, and 1st president, 1872-1879, United States Bank of Hartford. President Ætna Life Insurance Company, since 1879. Councilman, 1875, alderman, 1876, mayor, 1880-1888, of Hartford.

Elected governor Connecticut, for term, 1889-1891, and as no candidate for election in 1890 received constitutional majority of votes cast, he retained office as governor for term, 1891-1893. Candidate for United States senator, 1893. Elected United States senator, 1905, for term 1905-1911.

Delaware Republican nat. convs., 1888-1896.

Achievements

  • Bulkeley formed the Hartford Dark Blues of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players in 1874.

    Under his guidance, Aetna had been transformed from a life insurance company into a company that offered accident, health, automobile,workers compensation, and group insurance.
