Moritarō graduated from Economics Department of Tokyo University. Yamada Moritarō specialized in agronomy and theoretical economics.
As one of the central figures of the so-called "Kōza-ha" ("School of Lecturers"), Yamada Moritarō published "Nihon Shihon-shugi Hattatsu-shi Kōza" ("Lectures of the development of Japanese Capitalism") with Eitarō Noro, Yoshitaro Hiranō and Kinnosuke Otsuka around 1932. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1936. But adther the war Yamada Moritarō was reinstated as professor. His works include "Nihan Shihon-shugi Bunseki" ("Analysis of Japanese Capitalism").
He was expelled from the university because of his involvement in the case of Communist sympathizers.
