Came to the United States in boyhood. Served corporal to First lieutenant, Company H, 20th Wisconsin Infantry, 1862-1865. Worked way through preparatory school, college and seminary, in 9 years after war.

Graduate Oberlin Theological Seminary, 1874.
Ordained Congleton ministry, 1874. Pastor, Pittsfield, O., 1874-1876, Columbus, Wisconsin, 1876-1881, Hanover Saint Church, Milwaukee, 1881-1887. Appointed superintendent Home Missions for Germans by Congressional Home Mission Society, New York, and went to Germany to study church problems, assuming duties January 1, 1888.
Has given courses of lectures to German students at Chicago Theological Seminary, and acted as president of Wilton (Iowa) German-English College, about 5 years, refusing reelection in June, 1902.
Was sent to Russia, Germany and Switzerland, 1910, to study Germans and cultivate fraternal relations.
Married Harriet L. Hammond, of Ripon, August 9, 1871.
